Set amidst the beautiful pine forests of the Carpathian mountains, the purpose-built resort of Poiana Brasov has a compact lift system and offers an excellent range of skiing, particularly suited to beginners, and offers excellent value for money. Nursery slopes are situated in the village and on the plateau at the top of the mountain. The ski area offers easy progression to the main pistes with the added advantage of skiing back to the village on a long blue run. For non-skiers there is a great range of activities and excursions available, not to mention the legendary Dracula’s castle.

Money
Money should be taken in Sterling cash to change in resort to local currency. The notes should be new and in good condition as old, torn or defaced notes are not accepted. Credit cards are rarely accepted although there are numerous cash points where funds can be drawn (3% commission charge in 2005/06). Travellers’ Cheques and Eurocheques cannot be changed in resort, purchases in bars, restaurants and shops should all be made in local currency as credit card transactions are made in US$ and commission can be expensive.
Pre-Bookable Ski Packs
Because of the volatile nature of the Eastern European money market, we cannot guarantee the rates paid in resort for ski packs. We therefore strongly recommend that you pre-book ski school, lift passes and Skiers/Snowboarder's packages, as well as any equipment hire you may require. Packs cannot be sold in resort at UK prices.
Visas
Visas are not required for holders of full UK passport. Holders of other passports must enquire at the Consular Department of the Romanian Embassy for their requirements before booking, tel 0207 937 9666.

Learn to Turn
Beginners
The wide, gentle nursery areas are in the centre of the resort – with snow cannons on the main ‘learn to ski’ Bradul slope – and the plateau at the top of the mountain, reached by gondola, provide areas ideal for beginners. Very attentive, English-speaking instruction is provided by the ski school. Beginners soon progress on to the main ski area and by the end of the week, most will be skiing all the way back to the village on the long, confidence-building, blue run from the top of the Christianul Mare. In recognition of their high standards the ski school has been a regular Neilson award winner with one of the best ski and board schools in the Neilson programme.
Intermediates
Having a compact lift system means that there is plenty of scope for intermediates to improve. Three red runs provide skiing over varied terrain, and if you want to take it easy and perfect your parallel turns, there is a long, enjoyable blue run leading back to the village. You are recommended to take advantage kof the instruction provided by the local ski school – it’s really good value for money and the teaching is excellent.
Advanced
Advanced skiers will find Poiana Brasov limited as there are few challenging runs. Snowboarding The gentle slopes are ideal for mastering the basics. Beginners should book a ‘Learn to Snowboard’ package.

About Neilson
We've been around for around 25 years. We started as two separate companies, one providing top-end ski holidays and the other taking people sailing in Greece. For around two decades we became better and better at putting together holidays, one company doing fun things in the snow, the other having adventures in the Med. Then, in 1999, Thomas Cook, who owned both companies, decided that it would make sense for us to join together. That was when the famous orange logo appeared, and Neilson as we know it came into existence.
