Description

Guatemala Rafting/Archaeology & Belize with Pioneer Expeditions.  This expedition meanders through the impressive and ever changing scenery of Guatemala and combines white water (class IV) rafting, pristine pools and Mayan archaeology, before transferring to Belize Barrier Reef, for relaxation and diving off the white sandy beaches.

During our time in this intense country, we will raft the exciting white waters of the Rio Cahabon & Rio Dulce and swim in the enchanting pools of SEMUC CHAMPEY. We then transfer to the rainforest to explore the Mayan archeology by boat and by foot, before spending the last couple of days relaxing in the Belize Barrier Reef.

SPECIAL HIGHLIGHTS
• 4 days whitewater rafting the rapids of theLanquin and Cahabon rivers

• Experience the Guatemalan rainforest and marvel at the large variety of fauna and flora

• Exploring the ancient city of Tikal, one of the most impressive in the Mayan world.

• 2 or more days relaxing at your leisure on the Belize Great Barrier Reef

Guatemala (‘place of many trees’) lives up to its name and gives visitors an thrilling view of Central America. The country with the highest and most active volcanoes, remarkable Mayan ruins, dense jungles and an indigenous culture that flourishes through its traditional music, lively dance and colourful embroidered clothing.

The Mayan heart of Central America, Guatemala borders Mexico to the north and west, Belize to the northeast and Honduras and El Salvador to the east. Scattered around this mountainous and jungle covered country, the impressive ancient Mayan ruins and colonial buildings are a reminder of Guatemala’s heritage and civilized past.

Until recently, Guatemala was little visited and this culturally rich, archaeologically fascinating country, with its diverse natural environment, is a one-off that must be visited to be understood. In contrast,

Guatemala’s laid back tiny neighbour Belize offers the perfect setting for relaxing after the activities of the first 10 days. The second largest barrier reef in the world, the Belize barrier reef is an endless range of dramatic walls and undulating coral ridges blessed with calm waters, it is a remarkable sight to dive on, snorkel or simply observe from the white sandy beaches.

About Pioneer Expeditions
Pioneer Expeditions offers real adventures achieving extraordinary 'Pioneer Firsts'.

Our original 'Pioneer' itineraries are only run a limited number of times. This allows very small groups (usually up to 8 people) to visit exotic and little visited destinations, minimising the negative impact on the local environment and maximising the positives.

Nature and culture are important to us and there are plenty of opportunities on every trip to explore the fascinating flora and fauna, unusual places and landmarks around us. And after comfortably 'roughing it' in the wilds, we tend to spend the last few days relaxing in more luxurious accommodation. We try to make life as comfortable as possible, even when camping out in the wilds.

Our expedition leaders are very experienced field professionals and, while they are highly knowledgeable about their expedition area, we know that no one knows a place better than the people who live there so we always employ local guides and experts to work with our Pioneer leaders.

On many expeditions we aim to be the first group to achieve an unusual objective or particular mission. Canoeing a river from source to sea, climbing a remote mountain, swimming a volcanic lake, trekking a glacier or traversing a tropical island; we are constantly researching new ideas and experiences.

You will not need any specialist skills to come on a pioneer expedition – though you may leave with some – and age is no barrier.
