Your Itinerary

DAY 1 UK/Tunis
We fly to Tunis and, after relaxing over an included lunch at a local restaurant, we pay a visit to the ancient ruins that surround Carthage. The remnants that remain can only give us a clue as to the prominence and power of this once-great city that was built on trade but destroyed by the Romans in 146 BC. Following our visit to the ruins, we will continue to our hotel in the Carthage-Tunis area for dinner and an overnight stay.

DAY 2 KaIrouan & Tozeur
Today we head to the walled city of Kairouan, the former capital of the Maghreb region and one of the most holy Islamic cities in the world. Kairouan had its heyday between the 9th and 11th centuries under the Aghlabid and Zirid dynasties. Part of the original town remains in the splendid medina, including the magnificent 7th-century Great Mosque with its towering minaret. We make a stop for lunch en route before reaching Tozeur, an oasis town on the edge of the Sahara, where we stay for the next two nights. This evening you can enjoy an optional horse and carriage ride through the town’s cooling palm groves to experience Tozeur from a different perspective.

DAY 3 Selja Canyon, Tamerza & Ong Jemel
Today our remarkable journey takes us into the desert to Metlaoui. Here we board the Red Lizard, a delightful colonial-style train, for a remarkable journey through the dramatic Selja Canyon, which can only be reached by rail. It is incredible to leave the desert behind and journey into a landscape of mountains and gorges that are alternately bathed in light and shadow. After leaving the red lizard train we then step aboard four-wheel-drive vehicles for an exciting journey to the mountain oases of Tamerza and Chebika, where the stunning views of the rocky Atlas Mountains will take your breath away, before returning to Tozeur for lunch.

This afternoon we go back into the desert once more to see the great sand dunes near Nefta and Ong Jemel, which featured as a backdrop for the Star Wars movies. After enjoying dinner at the hotel we visit the interesting local Checruit Museum.

DAY 4 Chott el Jerid, Matmata & Gabes
We make an early morning start to admire the picturesque sunrise over the salt lakes of Chott el Jerid. We then continue on our journey, travelling to Douz for an opportunity to go camel riding into the Sahara Desert – surely this has to be a highlight of your Tunisian holiday. We then visit the famous underground houses at Matmata, which date back to the 4th century BC and are still inhabited. We continue to Gabes and stroll around the Jara market before making our way to Sfax for an overnight stay.

DAY 5 El Jem & Monastir
Today we head for El Jem and explore its splendid Roman amphitheatre, which is the third largest in the world. We continue to Monastir and discover the Ribat, whose tower faces out to sea, and the mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, the former president of Tunisia. After lunch in Monastir we travel to the seaside resort of Yasmine Hammamet, where we stay for three nights. Located just a few kilometres from Hammamet town, Yasmine Hammamet boasts a tree-lined seafront promenade, sandy beaches, elegant shops and a bustling marina.

DAY 6 Hammamet
Our morning tour of Old Hammamet takes us to the bustling markets and the 13th-century kasbah. This afternoon you are free to continue your explorations at your own pace and this evening we offer you the opportunity to enjoy a traditional folklore show.

DAY 7 Tunis
Today we wander through the lively souks and narrow alleys of the ancient medina in Tunis and visit the Bardo Archaeological Museum. We return to the hotel for lunch. The afternoon is at leisure.

DAY 8 Tunis/UK
We transfer to Tunis airport for the homeward flight.

You may want more flexibility to combine your trip with visits to friends and relatives or travel from an airport that we do not offer. If so, we offer a price reduction of up to £150 on many of our European holidays when you make your own way to your holiday hotel. Please remember that these arrangements do not include flights or transfers to and from your hotel and you will need to make your own travel arrangements.
