Picos de Europa Walking Holiday in Spain with the Adventure Company.  Explore the trails in Spain’s northern mountains.  The Picos de Europa are a compact and dramatic range of limestone mountains in northern Spain. The rugged and unspoilt landscape is home to vultures and chamois, and is dotted with remote villages.

This trekking itinerary follows a circular route and passes through some of the most well-known areas, including the Cares Gorge, a dramatic chasm up to 1000m deep. Elsewhere, you will visit the natural amphitheatre at Fuente Dé and the remote valley of Valdeon before heading out of the mountains and reaching San Vicente, a delightful old fishing village on the coast.

Day 1: Fly to Bilbao
Fly to Bilbao and drive to Potes.  Potes is the principal centre of the Picos de Europa. It lies strategically at the meeting point of the four valleys (Valdebaró, Valdeprado, Cereceda and Cillorigo) that make up this area known as Liébana. It has a small population but it is popular with tourists, walkers and mountaineers which give it a lively atmosphere.  It has its own particular microclimate due to the distance from the coast and the fact that it is completely surrounded by mountains which shelter it from the wetter coastal weather.

Day 2: Cosgaya
Walk to Cosgaya, passing charming villages built on the slopes of the Macizo Oriental.

Day 3: Fuente De
Climb towards Pena Oviedo before descending to Espinama and Fuente De

Day 4: Free Day

Today is a free day so you can choose what you what to do, whether you want to relax, do an optional activity such as cycling or horse riding or if you are really keen, you can go for another walk!

Fuente Dé is one of the important tourist attractions in Cantabria due to the existence of its cable-car, which dates back to the beginning of the 20th Century.  The top station (1834m) offers a fantastic viewpoint over the Picos and the surrounding mountains of the Cordillera Cantábrica.  Fuente Dé itself is an impressive rock amphitheatre, actually a glacial corrie, of enormous dimensions. It is possible to walk up to the top cable car station, although the route gets rather steep at the end.

From the top, it is possible to walk down through the pastures of Áliva towards Espinama and Fuente Dé, perhaps stopping en route at a hotel to enjoy a drink and take in stunning views of the impressive rock face of Peña Vieja, the highest mountain in Cantabria at 2613 m. It is also possible to enjoy a refreshing dip in the Lagos de Lloroza.

Day 5: Valdeon
Walking around the perimeter of the Central Massif of the Picos, you will climb to the high pastures where it is often possible to see birds of prey and chamois.  Below lies the beautiful and remote valley of Valdeon, your base for the night.

Day 6: Cares Gorge
Follow the footpath through the dramatic Cares Gorge as it clings to the rock and passes through rough-hewn tunnels, affording spectacular views of the landscape and river.  The day ends in Arenas de Cabrales, a lively little village.

Day 7: San Vicente
Today you will traverse from the mountains to the sea.  You will take the funicular railway to Bulnes for views of the spectacular Naranjo de Bulnes before heading to the old mining village of Sotres and on to the lovely fishing village of San Vicente, where you will spend your final night.

Day 8: Fly to London
Today, it is time to say goodbye to Spain and your new found friends.  You will drive to Bilbao where the trip ends for Land Only clients.  Clients on group flights will fly to London.

Clients travelling Land Only (i.e. not on our group flights from London) should make their own way to the joining point in Bilbao (day one of the itinerary as described in these Trip Notes). You will receive full details of exactly where to meet your Group Leader on the Joining Instructions which will be sent to you 2-3 weeks before your trip starts.
