Some of the most enthralling scenes from the classic shows and movies are tap dances – from Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers’ high energy, swirling routines to the unforgettable choreographed opening to 42nd Street where the curtain rises to a whole dance line tapping out a compulsive beat.

Impossible to emulate? Don’t you believe it. Over two half-day sessions, our expert tutors will move you through the basic steps of tap dancing, progressing you forwards and helping you to put those steps into a sequence.

Tap dance has a long and fascinating history, beginning in the 1830s in New York City as a fusion of the African Shuffle and Irish, Scottish, and English step dances. Watch a traditional clog dance or Irish step ‘Riverdance’ and you can see the influences. As the dances fused, a new American style of dancing emerged: tap dancing. The rest, as they say, is history.

Amazingly, it’s a dance that – with a little tuition and practice – you can look good at in a surprisingly short time. And you’ll have a total of eight hours’ tuition during your stay – more than enough to get you started.

We don’t promise to send you away quite up to Fred and Ginger’s standards – that might take a little longer! – but you should easily find a school local to you to take your new found expertise to a higher level, making new friends, and keeping fit, along the way.
